Apple Pie in a Jar
(makes six individual jar pies)
All you need:
3 cups apples, diced (5-6 large apples)
½ cup brown sugar
1/4 cup all-purpose flour
3/4 tsp cinnamon
1.5 TBSP butter
2 TBSP whole milk
1 tsp white sugar
Plus: 6 half-pint, wide mouth canning jars, cleaned, and pie crust (make your own or buy it.)
All you do:
- 1. If you are using homemade pie crust, prepare and roll to ~ 1/8 inch thick and 12" round. Cut homemade or pre-made crust into quarters. Place each quarter into a jar and press to the sides and bottom of the jar. Use leftover pieces of homemade crust or second pre-made crust for toppers. Use the jar ring or cookie cutter to make toppers or cut a lattice.
- 2. Meanwhile, Combine brown sugar, flour and cinnamon. Combine mixture with diced apples. Put about 1/2 cup of pie filling into each jar, ensuring you leave about 1/2 inch head space. Dot each pie-filled jar with ½ teaspoon of butter cut into small chunks.
- 3. Place the top crust onto the jar and "decorate". To give it a pretty golden brown color, brush the top of your pie with whole milk. For an added touch off sweetness, sprinkle white sugar on the top.
- Bake at 375 degrees for 45 minutes or until golden brown. The pies can also be frozen (prior to baking).
