Christmas Comes Alive in Downtown GI

Posted: Updated:

The spirit of Christmas came alive in downtown Grand Island Friday night.

Downtown Old Fashioned Christmas provided something for young and old, like rides and entertainment in the heart of Grand Island.

The community is trying to revitalize its downtown, and events like this showcase the area.

Volunteer Brian Whitecalf said, "The restaurants are open for sit down or get something to drink or eat. You can't find that in other communities where it's the big sprawl of businesses. We've made a lot of improvements downtown and it's starting to pay off."

The event also marks the kickoff of the Salvation Army Red Kettle campaign.

The goal in Grand Island alone is $205,000  this year, the most it's ever been.

"The community is great and always supportive of what we do," said Capt. Dave Mowers.

He said the money supports their homeless shelter and feeding program, which served 65,000 meals last year. All the dollars raised stay in the community.

The familiar red kettles and bell ringers will be at more than a dozen locations between now and Christmas.
