Water Users Expected to Face Limits Next Year

Posted: Updated:

Nebraska NRD officials are expecting to need to limit the use of water pulled from the Republican River next year as a result of this year's historically dry conditions.

Extra measures will likely be needed to keep the state in compliance with an inter-state pact allowing water from the river to be used by Colorado, Nebraska and Kansas. If the water is not regulated properly in Nebraska, the flows won't be sufficient for Kansans.

Nebraska is currently facing a lawsuit against Kansas for just such actions. The lawsuit is still pending before the U.S. Supreme Court.

The Nebraska Department of Natural Resources says the Upper and Lower Republican River Natural Resource Districts will need to impose additional water conservation measures next year.

The Middle Republican River NRD is expected to be OK without additional conservation.
