Grand Island's mayoral advisory council met again on Monday, nearly one week since the LGBT protection measure was passed in an overriding vote.
On the very first meeting of the council, which included former mayors, business
owners and even high–schoolers, the group was asked to take a vote - did the city council do the right thing in October when they voted down city–wide rights for the LGBT community.
City officials say the advisory council backed the city council in the same manner the issue
was voted down-- 80 percent to 20 percent.
Those results could be part of the reason Mayor Vavricek
vetoed last week's LGBT amendment citing the need for more feedback.
However, the city council took action and overrode the mayor and
approved the new amendment which offers protection against discrimination for city
employees during and after the hiring process.
