Police Searching for Suspect in Alleged Attempted Robbery, Assault at Champion Post Office

Posted: Updated:

Police are searching for a suspect in an alleged attempted armed robbery Monday at the Champion Post Office in the small town of Champion, Neb.

U.S. Postal Inspector Pamela Durkee confirmed Tuesday that a Hispanic male brandishing a knife allegedly attempted to rob the building shortly after 11 a.m.

The Chase County Sheriff's Office received a 911 call around 11:20 a.m. from an employee at the post office, who said that a man jumped the counter and grabbed her, demanding money from the safe, a press release from Sheriff Kevin Mueller says.

The suspect allegedly assaulted the employee, but she was able to escape and lock herself in the bathroom. The suspect fled on foot.

Police arrived on scene at 11:26 a.m. and found the employee -- whose name hasn't been released -- still hiding in the bathroom.

The employee sustained minor injuries to her neck, Durkee said. She was transported to the Chase County Hospital, where she was treated and released.

The investigation is still ongoing, but Durkee says police are looking for a Hispanic male in his mid 30s, approximately 5'5" with a mustache. He was wearing blue jeans and a gray sweatshirt.

The Chase County Sheriff's Office completed an initial investigation, and has turned over the investigation to the U.S. Postal Inspection Service out of Omaha and Denver. The Chase County Sheriff's Office is assisting them in the investigation.

The Chase County Sheriff's Office, Imperial Police Department and the Nebraska Sate Patrol assisted at the scene.
