Economic Slump Expected to Continue for Midwestern States

Posted: Updated:

A monthly economic index report released by Creighton University is suggesting that the Midwest's economic slump will continue over the next three to six months.

The Mid-America Business Conditions index rose slightly in November to a weak 48.0 from 46.5 in October. That is down from the 50.4 figure seen in September.

The survey of business leaders and supply managers from Arkansas, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oklahoma and South Dakota is used to rate economic growth.

The survey uses a collection of indexes that range from zero to 100. Any scores above 50 are indicative of growth while numbers under 50 suggest a decline in that index.

Creighton University economist Ernie Goss oversees the survey, and he says it is tracking "economic weakness, particularly for nondurable-goods producers."
