New Technology May Help You Achieve Your Fitness Goals

Each year, consumers spend up to $55 billion in programs, procedures and personal trainers as they try to lose weight. The secret to success, however, may come from the latest devices and apps adding new dimensions to proven weight loss methods.

New technologies available this year include Fitbit Ultra, a wireless device that automatically uploads your every mile jogged, weight lifted, stair climbed and minute slept to continuously provide you updates on progress toward your fitness goals.


  • The Withings WiFi Bodyscale measures weight, BMI, fat and lean muscle mass for up to eight users. The scale automatically shares data with your computer and mobile device, where you can chart your progress anytime.
  • The Fitbit Ultra – Wireless Tracker is a small, comfortable and discreet real-time activity tracker you clip onto your clothes to monitor your steps, distance, calories burned, floors climbed, sleep patterns and more. The device automatically and wirelessly uploads your fitness data to your smartphone, tablet and/or computer so you can continuously track progress toward your fitness goals.
  • The Sony SmartWatch connects to your Android smartphone by Bluetooth, accessing your compatible Google Play apps on a discreet, splash-proof watch. While working out, you can follow your social networks, monitor your fitness tracker apps, groove to your music player and more with a flick of your wristwatch.


  • All in Yoga provides 300 poses and multiple yoga classes that can be used anywhere at anytime on smartphones and tables. The 99 cent app for Apple and Android devices also features a photo, video, and audio guide and 3D muscle modes to accompany each pose.
  • Fleetly Fitness and Sports Tracker are free "fitness buddy" apps for Apple and Android devices, respectively, offering workout routines for different sports and targeted for different body areas. There are also quick full body workouts if you are short on time. Each workout comes with video, a description, tips and an area where you can log your progress. 
  • Endomondo Sports Tracker for Windows, Apple and Android devices connects your workout to your ears. In addition to tracking mileage, duration, distance, speed and calories of your workout, the Endomondo Sports Tracker gives audio feedback every mile. Get your friends to write a short message on Endomondo's website, and the audio coach will read you their peptalks live as you exercise.
