Sen. Nordquist Introduces Bill Requiring Nebraska's Elected Officials to Purchase Own Health Insurance

Omaha Sen. Jeremy Nordquist introduced LB18 Thursday that would have elected officials in the state of Nebraska buying their own health insurance in place of the state employee health insurance group plan currently used by elected officials.

If passed, the governor, lieutenant governor, attorney general, secretary of state, state treasurer, auditor of public accounts and members of the Legislature will be forced to purchase coverage on their own, just like many other Nebraskans do.

"If the private health insurance market that we create through legislation is good enough for our constituents, it should be good enough for policymakers and elected officials," said Senator Jeremy Nordquist.

"By forcing policymakers to buy health insurance on the individual market, they may finally understand the challenges faced by so many Nebraska families, who struggle to find a health insurance plan that is both affordable and provides the kind of coverage they need," Nordquist added.

Members of Congress must follow a similar requirement under the federal Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. The act forces members of Congress to purchase insurance coverage through the Health Insurance Exchange.
