Man Injured in Grand Island House Fire

Posted: Updated:

A 40-year-old Grand Island man was injured when his home caught fire early Wednesday morning.

The fire broke out in a house in the Keuster Lake area, just outside Grand Island city limits.

Elaine Schweitzer, a family member, rushed to the scene when she found out her family was in danger.

"I hurried over quickly," Schweitzer said. "I was not expecting to see what I seen. It was much worse."

Schweitzer says when her nephew, Brian, first saw the flames, he tried to move materials away from the fire but his efforts didn't do much.

"He literally grabbed the chair and picked it up and threw it outside to get it out of harm but by that time he realized that there was smoke everywhere and there was fire," Schweitzer said.

Once Brian knew he couldn't salvage the house, he woke up his family and they all evacuated.

Shortly after, Brian was taken to the hospital with minor burn injuries.

Grand Island, Doniphan, Alda and Saint Libory fire crews quickly responded to the fire, but by the time they arrived at the house it was too late.

"The house and its contents should be considered at total loss," Grand Island Rural Fire Chief Chuck Hoffman said.

Hoffman adds that it's a good thing someone was awake otherwise the fire could have gone unnoticed.

"There lives are saved, they are with us, and that's all that matters," Schweitzer said.

Hoffman said the fire started in the attic and the cause is not yet known.
