UNK Professor Named Woman Physicist of the Month

Posted: Updated:

Dr. Liubov Kreminska, an assistant professor of physics at the University of Nebraska at Kearney, has been named the Woman Physicist of the Month by the American Physical Society's Committee on the Status of Women in Physics.

"Dr. Kreminska is an outstanding individual who has done, and is doing, outstanding work in research, service and teaching," said Deanna Ratnikova, American Physical Society's women and education programs administrator. "She serves as an example for women science students and has been instrumental in bringing outstanding women in science to speak to students at UNK.

"The CSWP Woman Physicist of the Month award recognizes female physicists who have had a positive impact on other individuals' lives and careers," Ratnikova said.

As a result of her willingness to involve students in her research, Dr. Kreminska has received the College of Natural and Social Sciences Research Mentoring award. Her students have gone on to receive NASA Fellowships, undergraduate fellowship awards and have participated in Research Experiences for Undergraduates. She has also collaborated with physicists at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and faculty from the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at UNK. She has served on several committees and has been a judge for the Nebraska Junior Academy of Sciences, Central Region.

The Committee on the Status of Women in Physics was founded in 1972 to address the encouragement and career development of women physicists. The committee consists of nine volunteer members appointed by the president of the APS. Throughout its 37-year history, CSWP has been an active sponsor of studies, programs and publications to foster women in physics.
