The YWCA Zone program is looking to participate in the spirit of Global Youth Service Day by creating awareness of the hunger many experience throughout the Hastings community.
The project will kick off on Monday, Jan. 21, in recognition of Martin Luther King Day and will include the recruitment of youth volunteers by Andy Chase, a long time advocate for the Zone. Chase also serves on the Youth Leadership Council and is a peer leader for the Middle School Zone program. John Roman, AmeriCorps member, will oversee the project.
The youth involved in the project will visit various sites around Hastings that serve meals to those in need. Then in the spring the youth will service one of those sites as part of their service learning project running from April 26-28.
The service site and volunteer hours will be determined
by the youth involved in the project. They will then be asked to reflect on their experience in journals.
The goal for the youth involved in this project is not only to raise awareness for their cause but also to create a campaign to implement/sell to those that live, work and play in the Hastings area.
