Lexington Benefit Raises Funds To Help Resident Get Housing

Posted: Updated:

Paying it forward...that's what members of one local community are doing to help one of their own find new housing by next month.

After his trailer caught fire last summer Don Earhart found temporary housing in a fifth wheel camper, but Lexington City ordinance says no more campers on trailer court property.

Friends and family gathered at the Lexington Eagles Club to help Don on Sunday. Organizers say time is of the essence when it comes to helping their friend.

"He doesn't say no, he never says no, so it's just time to give back and you know, he's not per se homeless, but he will be February 29th," said benefit organizer Karen Ussery. "And hopefully the city will get him a little extension that when we do get that trailer he'll be able to put it in by springtime."

All of this support may be overwhelming to Earhart, but he's also humbled by everyone's help.

"I've always been the type of person to take care of myself and take care of things that need to be done," said Don Earhart. "But to find out that people will come together for you when it's necessary it's just overwhelming."

Earhart has until February 20 to remove the camper from the property.

Organizers hope to raise enough money for at least a down payment on a different trailer.
