Johanns Reacts to New Proposed Birth Control Opt-out Rule

Posted: Updated:

The Obama administration announced Friday a new proposed rule to the mandate that could allow religious organizations to opt-out of providing birth control and abortion inducing drugs on their insurance plans.

The rule would broaden the definition of organizations eligible for the opting-out of contraceptive coverage.

Sen. Mike Johanns released a statement in reaction to the proposed rule.

"This decision does not address the bigger picture," said Johanns.

"This Administration continues to misunderstand that the heart of the issue is religious freedom... and no American should be forced to violate their moral and religious beliefs. It is absurd to suggest insurance companies will simply offer these services for free. Americans will pay for this coverage through higher premiums... violating their moral beliefs and surrendering their religious freedom. That is a price too high," said the senator.
