Mayor Jay Vavricek has decided who he will be recommending for Grand Island public works director at the next city council meeting.
John Collins, of Baton Rouge, La., will be recommended Feb. 12 for the position, which he has actually already held. Collins worked as the city's public works director from March 2011 until July 2012.
The mayor says the fact that he has already worked with the city is one of the reasons he decided to recommend Collins.
Vavricek said, "John is uniquely qualified to serve as Public
Works Director. Of those who applied for the position, John was clearly the
most qualified and with the most experience. Unlike no other
candidate, his previous employment in the City gives added confidence
to know he will successfully carry out the department's many
responsibilities in service to the people of Grand
Island."
During his time in Grand Island, Collins helped to implement the Downtown Quiet
Zone, develop the Wastewater Treatment Plant improvement plan, update a
dewatering feasibility study, and lead many other projects.
Before coming to Grand Island Collins spent over 25 years serving in various statewide engineering and management positions for the State of Louisiana Department of Transportation.
Collins' official start date will be set after the appointment is approved by the city council.
