February is Nebraska 4-H Month

Posted: Updated:

Nebraska 4-H is making a difference in the lives of young people across the state. As we celebrate Nebraska 4-H Month we look at the benefits of participating in 4-H.

What is 4-H?

4-H is a community of young people, ages 5-19 across America who are learning leadership, citizenship, and life skills. 4-H empowers youth to reach their full potential working and learning in partnership with caring adults. In Nebraska, 1 out of every 3 young people are taking part in 4-H and reaping the benefits.

What are some of the benefits of being in 4-H?

4-H'ers gain subject matter knowledge, while learning life skills. Life skills such as

  • Critical thinking,
  • Problem solving;
  • Respecting self, others, and the environment;
  • Communication;
  • Serving others;
  • Choosing healthy lifestyles; and
  • Managing change and challenges can be gained through being in 4-H.

What can youth do in 4-H?

What is so exciting about 4-H is the affiliation of the University of Nebraska. Youth benefit from fun researched-based educational programs. There are over 150 projects for youth to choose from. Ranging from rockets, to livestock, to home environment to computers. There is really something for everyone.

In Kearney and Franklin Counties we are just starting a Robotics/Lego League club for youth to learn more about science, engineering and technology. We have shooting sports for those youth who would like to learn more about gun safety and bb guns, archery and trapshooting. Youth are taking part in service learning opportunities. There are programs for all ages.

Counties do workshops, celebrations, County Fair, Citizenship Washington Focus Conference, club meetings.

What is going on during Nebraska 4-H Month?

This is the time that we see 4-H Clubs getting reorganized for the year. It's a time for us to recruit new members, while celebrating what a difference 4-H makes in the life of young people as well as adults. We have over 10,000 volunteers in Nebraska who work with young people. So this is a great time to thank those volunteers and supporters for the work they do as well.

There are also lots of different activities going on this month that varies from county to county. Some are doing special discovery nights or family nights to introduce 4-H to young people. Others are doing special promotions for 4-H and community presentations.

For more information on being a part of 4-H, call your local extension office.
