Scrabble for Literacy

Posted: Updated:

A Scrabble match in Grand Island is working to help keep the city's literacy rate up.

Amateur Scrabble-gamers got together for the fundraiser event to help promote literacy skills.

NTV's own Steve White emceed the tournament, that was all about benefiting the Grand Island Literacy Council.

Jen Cammon-Larson, executive director for the council said, "The primary function is to help people read, write and speak the English language whether they're homegrown folks or immigrants. The literacy rates here in Grand Island are higher than other places."

She says about half of their funds come from word-game tournaments and competitions like Scrabble, as well as an annual spelling bee.

The funds from the board game fans will help keep doors open and help continue free one-on-one tutoring.
