Sen. Mike Johanns has announced he will not be running for re-election to the United States Senate.
Johanns made the announcement Monday with his wife, Stephanie, saying, "We have decided not to seek re-election."
The couple says that between the two of them, they have been on both the primary and general election ballots 16 times. They have served in eight offices and say they have been in public service over 32 years, following this term.
In their letter they said, "During these many years, we have cherished our time together. So as we think about the next stage of our lives, we want a quieter time with our focus on each other, our family and our faith.
"We are also confident that there will be many more opportunities to serve our state and our nation.
"We look forward to the remaining time in the Senate. It is an honor to have served in so many ways over so many years."
The letter concluded, "May God continue to bless Nebraska and our great nation."
Gov. Dave Heineman responded to the announcement praising Johanns' career spanning local, state and national offices.
He said, "We are forever thankful for his commitment to serving our citizens, in particular, our farmers and ranchers, and our veterans. Sally and I are both thankful and grateful to Senator Johanns and Stephanie for their service. Nebraskans are proud of you."
