Gov. Heineman Appoints New Chief Medical Officer

Gov. Dave Heineman has appointed Dr. Joseph Acierno to be Nebraska's new Chief Medical Officer.

Acierno, 51, of Omaha, will also serve as Director of the Division of Public Health for the State of Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services.

He will go from serving as deputy chief medical officer to his new role on March 8.

Heineman said, "His experience as deputy chief medical officer, a doctor and attorney make him uniquely qualified to serve in this capacity. I am confident that his knowledge of medicine, public health issues and medical-legal matters will serve Nebraska's citizens in a positive way."

Acierno is currently oversees the division responsible for the licensure of health care facilities and pracitioners across the state as well as the Environmental Health Unit. The Environmental Health Unit oversees public drinking water, radiological health, indoor air quality and other health matters.

Additionally, Acierno is involved with the Investigations Unit and emergency response activities for the Division of Public Health.

He is married with two children and is a graduate of Creighton University with a Bachelor of Science degree as well as degrees in Doctor of Medicine and Juris Doctor.

The current Chief of Medicine, Dr. Joann Schaefer, has accepted the job of Vice President for Medical Care and Management with Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Nebraska.
