Lawmakers have killed LB52, which would allow work-camp inmates to work for nonprofit organizations.

The bill died during floor debate Wednesday after an amendment banning nonprofit groups from discriminating against inmates based on sexual orientation was approved in a 29-5 vote Tuesday.

Sen. Ernie Chambers of Omaha had been filibustering to kill the measure, saying it would allow private groups to exploit free prison labor. He called for the amendment to be added to the bill.

Supporters say the bill would let inmates work on projects that benefit the public.

Senator Mark Christensen of Imperial sponsored the bill. He opposed the amendment and said he was "shocked" that lawmakers approved it.
