UPDATE: Accusations Regarding Tampered Mail Arise

Posted: Updated:

"If you have any complaints, I would be happy to hear them before I leave today," said Ed Goforth, manager of post office operations.

Immediately following the meeting, complaints poured in.

Upland Postmaster Dottie Gramke has received accusations of opening mail that is not hers. Ten pages of letters have been collected regarding the matter.

"I have written complaints, from numerous people, and I have sent them to (Congressman) Adrian Smith," said Heather Stonerook, alleged victim.

One letter addressed to Goforth has over 10 complaints; one stating mail being opened and damaged. Long time customers says this is not behavior that fits Gramke's character.

"I feel like we've been forwarding mail out of this office, and having our mail delivered out of this office, and never had a problem. She has been here before anyone complained. It seems like a witch-hunt," said Marvin Aulner, Upland USPS customer.

NTV brought the accusations to Gramke, and she refused to comment regarding the alleged tampering done to mail in her office.

"She started going through my mail. I started talking to others, and found out I was not alone. [Everything] including registered letters, medicaid papers, bank statements, lawyer papers, etc. You name it; it's been gone through," said Stonerook.

Some living in Upland say enough is enough, and they are taking actions into their own hands.

"I mail everything in another town now...even when I order something online. I have to mail it to someone else because I'm afraid I'm not going to get it," said Stonerook.

Many customers, though, are standing at Gramke's defense.

"I didn't see her open any packages," said one Upland resident.

"I don't think it would because I don't think she's that type of person," said Aulner.

Goforth says this case remains under investigation.

UPDATE: New developments have emerged in the USPS mail tampering case out of the small town of Upland.

Officials with the USPS report there have been no findings of wrongdoing regarding mail tampering at this time.

Post office operations manager Ed Goforth said "[I] don't know if the investigation is still ongoing, but there hasn't been any complaints lately."

He did confirm that one package was damaged during handling in the processing center but not at the Upland post office

When asked if the FBI was involved in this scenario, He said he was unsure and would not comment further due to his uncertainty.

Authorities with the FBI said that they would "not confirm or deny" their involvement.
