LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — University of Nebraska officials are unhappy with a preliminary state budget that allocates less money than what Gov. Dave Heineman had proposed.

President J.B. Milliken says in a statement that he was "surprised and
disappointed" with the recommendations from the Legislature's
Appropriations Committee.
The committee released a tentative budget this week that increases state aid to the university
by $36 million, compared with the $62 million increase in Heineman's
proposal. Milliken says the aid increase is crucial for growing student
enrollment, expanding key programs, and keeping the university competitive.
The
committee's chairman, Sen. Heath Mello of Omaha, stresses that the
budget is preliminary and subject to change. Mello says lawmakers have
proposed reasonable increases for the university, but lawmakers also plan to revisit the funding.
