The Trails and Rails Museum in Kearney has announced plans to build a "family history center" on adjacent land.
The building would house artifacts,
offices, space for traveling exhibits, a conference room and a gift
shop.
The $3.1 million building is expected be open in early 2014. The museum board of directors hopes to break ground in September.
The Buffalo County Historical Society says the events are what keep people interested in the museum. The museum hosts half-marathon and ghost hunting events that bring new people to the
museum. Wild Science Thursdays keep kids learning during the summers, and according to
the society, all the events are geared toward family fun and learning.
Board
chairman Gary Straatmann says the museum is "becoming
the place where people want to donate family history."
