Grand Island YWCA Hosts The Vagina Monologues at College Park

Posted: Updated:

Vanity. Violence. Vivacious. Victim. What do these words have in common? They all relate to the series of stories that will be shared in this year's production of The Vagina Monologues Friday and Saturday, March 22 and 23 at 7 p.m. at College Park in Grand Island.

The Vagina Monologues consists of a series of short vignettes based on Eve Ensler's interviews with more than 200 women. With humor and grace the piece celebrates women's sexuality and strength. Through this play and the liberation of this one word, countless women throughout the world have taken control of their bodies and their lives. The monologues deal with issues such as violence against women and try to promote women's empowerment. Some are serious and raise awareness about issues like female genital mutilation and others are more humorous. The Vagina Monologues is bringing skeletons out of the closet as some suppressed feelings or topics will be discussed throughout the monologues. This is the 17th year The Vagina Monologues has given voice to the different experiences that women have.

Director, Kourtney Patcher, shares "Expect to be amazed by the information that is presented to you. Expect to be left speechless, to have your entire perspective changed. Expect to be sad, to laugh, and to rejoice in the sisterhood we share and that you have experienced as you leave. Dudes can attend, too."

Witty and irreverent, compassionate and wise, this award winning masterpiece will be performed by local women from all walks of life. Cast members include Nicki Stoltenberg, Sarah Bockoven, Gale Pemberton, Peggy Lang, Analy Gonzales, Nikki Sanchez, Beth Simonson, Katie Bohrer, Kendra Beckstead, Janice Kamarad, Jody Backer, Marley Patcher, Anita Lewandowski Brown and Kourtney Patcher.

You will laugh, you will cry, you will be inspired, you may even be called into service by the stories you hear during the performance. Tickets are on sale now at the YWCA, 211 E Fonner Park Road or from cast members for $10 and will be available at the door for $15. Refreshments will be available, along with a raffle/ticket auction with over 50 items.

Ninety percent of all funds raised will benefit the YWCA to promote women's programming in our community and ten percent is returned to the V-Day Foundation for use of the materials.
