Grand Island to Host Hiring Our Heroes Job Fair

Posted: Updated:

A Hiring Our Heroes job fair will come to Grand Island in May in a cooperative effort between the United States Chamber of Commerce, the Nebraska Department of Labor and the Nebraska National Guard.

Hiring Our Heroes is an initiative aimed at helping veterans and military spouses find meaningful employment in Nebraska.

"We are proud to be a part of this initiative to help veterans and military spouses find meaningful employment here in Nebraska," said Gov. Dave Heineman. "There are approximately 4,700 Army and Air National Guardsmen and women in Nebraska and thousands more Nebraskans serve in the U.S. Reserves and active military. The enthusiasm surrounding Hiring Our Heroes shows that the courage and sacrifice demonstrated by these men and women has not gone unnoticed."

Heineman said there are 4,700 men and women serving in the Army and Air National Guard in Nebraska, as well as thousands more serving in the U.S. Reserves and active military. He is inviting those veterans to the Hiring Our Heroes jobs fairs in Lincoln and Grand Island.

The Lincoln fair is taking place April 2 at the Lancaster Event Center from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Grand Island event will follow on May 1 at the Heartland Event Center from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The Lincoln event currently has 57 employers registered, while Grand Island has 62 registered.

Maj. Gen. Judd Lyons, Nebraska Adjutant General shares why service men and women make good employees. He said, "Our Nebraska National Guardsmen and women possess important skills like leadership, problem-solving, an ability to work under pressure and time management. Employers desire and value these skills."

"The same could be said for Nebraska's military spouses who have taken on numerous additional responsibilities and hone their skills while their loved ones were deployed," he added. "They, too, bring tremendous qualities that today's employers need."

Prior to the job fairs, the Nebraska Department of Labor is hosting an employment workshop on Wednesday, March 27 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Department's Lincoln Career Center at 1010 N Street.

The workshop is aimed at helping current and former servicemen and women translate their military skills into the civilian job market. Workshop sessions will cover resume writing, meeting with employers, professional etiquette and other career topics.
