Controlled substance abuse in North Platte appears to be similar to other communities in central Nebraska.
Authorities have created a task force for the central region that has helped keep drug abuse in Lincoln County lower than many feel it could be. The task force is now able to conduct investigations in 22 counties.
Through the task force, officials have found that drug abuse does not peak at any specific time. In fact, it is remaining at a consistent level throughout the year. Furthermore, they have also found why abuse is an issue.
"It seems that abuse of controlled substances in any Nebraska community is kind of a supply-and-demand issue," said Eric Rice, sergeant for Nebraska State Patrol. "We have people involved with many different controlled substances, and sometimes, people sell these substances to make money or to support their drug habit."
Authorities with the State Patrol also mentioned that the preferred substance of choice often changes in the area, but the consistency in distribution and use has not changed much.
