A Grand Island man acquitted of murder charges last November has pleaded no contest to a charge of assaulting a corrections officer.

Arkanjelo Kot, 36, changed his plea on Monday in exchange for having a failure to appear charge dropped. An arrest warrant had to be issued for Kot following his failing to appear for a pre-trial hearing for his assault charge. Kot later turned himself in.

Prosecutors say Kot assaulted a jail guard on June 15, while in jail on a first-degree murder charge. Officials say the guard was trying to break up an argument between Kot and another inmate when Kot assaulted him.

Kot's attorney, Jim Truell, said his client was frustrated and believed the guard was discriminating against him because the other inmate wasn't punished.

Kot's sentencing has been scheduled for May 28. He faces up to 20 years in prison for second-degree assault.
