FFA Kids Display Mechanical Know-How

Posted: Updated:

The state FFA convention is underway, not just in Lincoln but also here in central Nebraska.

For the second year in a row, the state ag mechanics contest came to Grand Island.

As tractors, combines, and other equipment become more sophisticated, mechanical know–how is important on the farm.

Mitch Fagan of High Plains said, "You have to know how to maintain things on your own because you can't hire everything done, so many things in farm and ag you need to know about. Electrical, construction, maintenance on tractors, all that good stuff."

Wade Hilker of Central Community College organized the event.

He said FFA is a great opportunity to showcase agriculture.

"It's the driving force of our economy – great way to introduce careers and look to the future of specialization of ag," he said.

Organizers of the ag mechanics say they stepped up their game this year, with more real world activities.

The Nebraska State Patrol was also involved, letting kids kick the tires of a big rig.

State FFA continues the next few days in Lincoln.
