The UNK Women's Center is hosting "Take Back
the Night," on April 11, at the University of Nebraska at Kearney.
The free event is open to the public and features nationally recognized women's right advocate Angela Rose as the event's keynote speaker. The event starts at 7 p.m. at the Nebraska Student Union Ponderosa Room. A drag show performance will follow at 8 p.m., and a walk to
25th Street for a peaceful demonstration against violence will follow that. At 10:30 p.m. the evening will conclude with a
rally at Copeland Fountain. Food and entertainment will be part of the rally.
The Women's Center and the
Queer Straight Alliance organized the event to raise community awareness
about issues related to violence against women and minorities.
"At this event, we hope to highlight the
idea of empowerment or giving respect and acceptance to individuals," said Matt
Mims, UNK professor in Counseling and School Psychology Department and adviser
