A neighbor's quick thinking aids in a quick response from the Kearney Fire Department.
Around 6:45 p.m. on Thursday, responders with the Kearney Volunteer Fire Department were called to 1733 Estates St. after neighbors noticed smoke coming from the home.
Fire officials say smoke was coming from the eaves and around the foundation, and when crews attacked the fire at the front door and ventilated windows, heavy black smoke poured out the back windows.
No one was home at the time of the fire, but the house suffered extensive damage in the basement and first floor.
The fire continues to be under investigation by the State Fire Marshall's Office.
