A massive storm system pounded central Nebraska overnight, knocking out power and causing damage to homes and businesses, including the University of Nebraska-Kearney.

Nickel size hail fell from Gothenburg to Fullerton, while the National Weather Service recorded winds gusting to 75 miles an hour in the Kearney area.

Nebraska Public Power is still showing outages on their website, but NPPD spokesman Stan Clouse says power crews are out working on getting all power restored. Power has already been restored to many that lost power overnight.

Southern Power District has also had to work hard to restore power to many in Phelps County. About one mile of poles along the Funk-Odessa road north of Funk were damaged overnight in addition to various individual poles across the area.

Near Holdrege, a garage door and window were blown out by the wind. Not far away, a semi was knocked over by strong gusts.

Kearney, and Buffalo County were hard hit. The emergency manager reports power outages, a destroyed home, and damage to dorms at UNK.

In addition, a portion of the roof was peeled back on the fine arts building, and a chunk of roof was removed from the college library.

Across the city, there is a lot of tree damage. Around 1:00 a.m., trees were reported blocking roadways. The emergency manager reported a mobile home was "completely destroyed."

Golf ball size hail was reported in Kearney and also near Giltner.

The National Weather Service office in Hastings saw nickel size hail mixed with some the size of quarters.

North of Grand Island, near St. Libory law enforcement reported flooding, as water covered area roads.
