Last summer, lightning caused fires burnt a large portion of the pine ridge in NW Nebraska. In an effort to replant, 800 food blocks have been created for wildlife.

The blocks also contain numerous tree and shrub seeds which the animals will naturally and randomly deposit. Landowners in that part of the state can buy the blocks for $3 each and scatter them about properties. The blocks are available from the Upper Niobrara Natural Resources District in Chadron.

It won't be long before morel mushrooms will be popping up. This activity results in way too many trespassing complaints from landowners. Obtain permission from landowners early on in the season.

An outdoor woman event is planned for Saturday, April 27 at Platte River State Park near Louisville. Registration must be in by April 19. The one day workshop will center around horseback riding, Dutch oven cooking and a variety of shooting skills. Contact Julia Plugge in Lincoln at 471-6009 for details.

See a reenactment of life at an 1870's great plains outpost at Fort Hartsuff State Historical park. The park sits a few miles off the main highway between Burwell and Ord. Saturday and Sunday, April 13-14, uniformed soldiers will occupy the buildings and grounds portraying activities of the era.

The annual Outdoor Discovery Family Day will be held Saturday, May 11 at the Fort Kearny State Recreation Area. There will be dozens of activities and demonstrations.
