April is Child Abuse Awareness Month

Posted: Updated:

In Nebraska, there were over 30,000 calls to report child abuse in just one year, 2011. About half of those were substantiated. Over 5000 children were involved in those calls where a problem was found.

Kids Count is an organization that looks at four major categories to rank states regarding child well-being.

  • They are education, economic well-being, health, and safety and risky behaviors.
  • Kids Count explains that a child's well being is linked in many ways to its state's well-being.
  • Nebraska ranks 9 of 50 overall.

Nebraska is a mandatory reporting state. If you suspect a child has been subjected to child abuse or neglect, call the hotline to report the incident to authorities. The toll-free hotline number is 1-800-652-1999.
