Service Academy Open House Teaches Area Students About Military Opportunities

Posted: Updated:

Students around Central and Western Nebraska Saturday learned about the various academy programs available at the Service Academy open house at Central Community College's Grand Island campus.

"Those who answer the call to service are some of the best and brightest in the country, and I'm always proud to see so many young Nebraskans interested in becoming military leaders," U.S. senator Mike Johanns (R-Neb.) said in a press release about the event.

"Nebraska has no shortage of patriotic young men and women willing to serve their country," said Congressman Adrian Smith (R-Neb. 3). "I hope interested young people will attend this event to learn more about the unique opportunities offered by the service academies and ROTC programs."

General Roger Lempke, state director of Military Affairs for Johanns said it was important for students to have the academies and congressional offices under one roof.

"It's one stop they can get Air Force, Navy, Army, Marine and Coast Guard information all in one and face–to–face," Lempke said. "Otherwise they'd be online or try to do it other was. The young people are interested in what they offer, careers they offer, type of education, majors/minors, and what the lifestyle is like, because it's going to be different at a military academy."

Students were able to learn about the service academies nomination process.
