Former Senate Candidate Pat Flynn Loses Cancer Battle

Posted: Updated:

Former Republican Senate candidate Pat Flynn of Schuyler has died, following a battle with cancer.

A statement on his Facebook page thanks supporters "for the love and support you've provided Pat Flynn over the last couple of years both in his race and his efforts in the betterment of our country."

It continued, "We are sad to announce that Pat passed away over the weekend from cancer. He will be greatly missed but never forgotten. We ask that you honor Pat by continuing his fight for our country!"

Flynn sold his business to run for Senate, taking part in the Republican primary against Deb Fischer, Jon Bruning, and Don Stenberg.

"Burned the boat and got in this race with both feet," he told NTV in 2012.

He campaigned in coffee shops and on Facebook. He was a volunteer Catholic youth leader and never married. He said he "got in a lot of trouble" when he was younger, and said being single was a "gift" in his life.

While not well-funded, he brought a lot of energy and passion to his campaign.

He told NTV, "I see it as my duty to do this as an American and that's why I stepped up to the plate and we're here to hit a home run and take America back to its constitutional roots."

Friends say he only recently learned he had advanced cancer. He was 54.
