A trial date has been set for a 26-year-old man accused of child abuse resulting in the death of a 2-year-old Gering girl.

Dustin Chauncey will go to trial in August for the death of Juliette Geurts, who died from traumatic injuries in July 2008. He has pleaded not guilty to harming the child.

Chauncey had two of the three charges originally filed against him dismissed last week. Prosecutors in the case cited statute of limitations as the reason for dismissing the felony manslaughter charge and a misdemeanor charge for providing false information to police.

Chauncey was dating the girl's mother, Charyse Geurts, at the time of the incident. Geurts was also charged in the death, but charges against her have also been dropped due to the statute of limitations.

He is currently serving time in a Colorado prison on a drug conviction.
