Special Olympics Torch Run Takes to Kearney Streets

Posted: Updated:

A group of dedicated individuals laced up their running shoes to support a good cause.

Runners young and old took to the streets of Kearney Thursday afternoon, carrying the flame for the Nebraska Law Enforcement Special Olympics Torch Run.

These smaller, more localized runs help to get more of the athletes involved, while gathering community support for the program -- both financially and socially.

"Awareness is one of the biggest things we promote, and that's what we're doing today. We've got a large group of people here, a lot of people in the community to see this, we advertised it," said run director Jeff Boston. "Want people to be aware of Special Olympics program and know it's out there, and know they can help."

These local runs continue throughout the state as part of 'Torch Run Week' which culminates at the Special Olympics summer games in Omaha on May 23.

REPORTER'S NOTES: Two more area runs include Grand Island on May 18 and Minden on May 21. More information on participating in local runs or supporting the Special Olympics fundraising effort can be found on www.sone.org.
