Kid's Safety Day Focuses on Every Day Activities

Posted: Updated:

Accidents are the number one cause of injury and death to children, and local officials are hoping to change that through fun events that help increase awareness.

The University of Nebraska-Kearney's Safety Center and Good Samaritan Trauma Outreach teamed up Saturday, teaching about accidents and unsafe practices that could happen in kids' lives.

Officials say these hands–on activities, ranging from safe driving to cancer prevention, give kids a better way to learn through fun activities, but with the ultimate goal in mind -- saving lives.

"We hope that both children and parents come away with that all the things they do are fun, but they also could be injured by them," said UNK's Cindy Houlden. "And we hope they can prevent themselves [from] getting hurt."

"Our goal is to prevent injury," said Good Samaritan's Joseph Debban,"and so with all the kids that come through today, if we prevent one accident, save one life, all of this will have been worth it. So that's what we're shooting for."

Organizers plan to make this an annual event, with plans already set for next year's 2nd annual Kid's Safe Day in May.
