Block Party Kick-off

Posted: Updated:

As part of Buffalo County Community Partners' 2013 Annual Fund Campaign, and in an effort to build a healthier Buffalo County, Community Partners is promoting Community Building Block Parties throughout Buffalo County this summer. These parties will encourage healthful living by promoting the five strategic goals of the Buffalo County 2020 Vision, providing resources for community members, and creating a conversation about the health of our community.

Community Partners is hosting a Community Building Block Party kick-off party June 21, from 5:30 p.m. – 7:00 p.m., at Kearney's Centennial Park. The event will include free food, including dishes from Activate Buffalo County and Sweet Success' Healthful Potluck Favorites recipe book, games and activities hosted by the Buffalo County Youth Advisory Board, information and resources from community coalitions, and a meet-and-greet with the board of directors and staff.

Community Building Block Party toolkits will be available for a $10 donation to Community Partners' 2013 Annual Fund Campaign. These kits will include resources on hosting your own healthful party, including a recipe guide, D.I.Y. yard games and activities, community resources and more.

Community resolutions were sent to the cities and villages of Buffalo County with guidelines for the parties. Guidelines include: serving healthful food, with a focus on fruits and vegetables; limiting the consumption of sugary beverages; providing activities and games for all ages; discouraging the use of electronic devices and promoting community interaction; prohibiting alcoholic beverages; encouraging youth attendance and seeking to fill mentorship roles; promoting the idea of community gardens with a diabetes focus; encouraging community members to get annual health screenings; and encouraging neighborhood interaction to grow healthy, sustainable communities.

Anyone interested in hosting a party in their community can pick up a party toolkit at the kick-off event June 21 or register online at bcchp.org/blockparty and pick up a kit at the Community Partners office.

Leading the 2013 Annual Fund Campaign for Community Partners with a $125,000 goal are Campaign Chairpersons Bruce Lear and Jan Rodehorst. So far, $41,000 has been raised towards the goal.

Buffalo County Community Partners is a non-profit organization that seeks to assess, strengthen, and promote the health of Buffalo County through the promotion of the Buffalo County 2020 Vision. The 2020 Vision introduces five strategic directions and targets for attainment by the year 2020.

It should be noted that a Kearney ordinance prohibits closing off streets to hold a block party.
