Nebraska Public Power Department officials are warning of a payment scam being reported by customers in Norfolk and Kearney.
The caller claims to be with "the electric utility" collecting for a past due amount on the customer's bill. The caller says there was no signature on the check or that it did not clear the bank.
The scam then plays out when the caller asks for the payment to be made immediately over the phone with a credit card.
NPPD officials say they will not ask for a debit or credit number as part of their policy. They advise customers that receive a call like this to contact NPPD's customer care line at 1.877.275.6773.
Individuals reporting these calls are also encouraged to contact
local law enforcement about any suspicious calls demanding immediate payment of
their electric bill.
