Vavricek Fires GI City Attorney over Relationship Breakdown

Posted: Updated:

Grand Island Mayor Jay Vavricek has removed the city attorney, saying there's been a "general breakdown in the relationship" between Bob Sivick, the mayor, and city council.

The city delivered the update just before 6:00 on Monday via email, in the form of an additional city council agenda item.

The memo said Sivick's problem has showed itself by his "refusal to abide by Council directive."

Sivick has found himself in a difficult position over the last few years, with tensions between the council and mayor.

Earlier this year, Sivick nearly found himself as prosecutor, when the city council considered removing Vavricek from office for misconduct, following his arrest on suspicion of DUI.

Sivick withdrew from the process, saying he would have a conflict of interest because his clients include the mayor, the city and the City Council.

The council later decided not to proceed with a hearing against Vavricek. Since that time, the mayor and council have not sparred in public as they had.

City code gives the mayor the power to remove the city attorney from office.

Further details about Sivick's removal were not immediately available. The city council will consider a resolution in support of Sivick's termination at Tuesday night's meeting.
