The city of Grand Island has added a new member to the fire department after deciding to add the position of life safety inspector.

Shayne Murphy has taken over the new position aimed at increasing fire prevention efforts. The position was created following recommendations from the International City/County Management Association public safety study done in 2012. The city council approved the idea in April.

Murphy will be responsible for life safety code enforcement. Those responsibilities include: commercial fire safety inspections, maintaining inspection records, conducting plan reviews, issuing fire permits, and reviewing plans for automatic sprinklers, fire suppression systems and alarm systems. Murphy will also give public presentations covering various fire safety topics.

Murphy worked with the Grand Island Fire Department from 1982 until his retirement in 2010. He held the positions of firefighter and firefighter/paramedic during that time. Murphy also has previous work experience conducting independent inspections for private insurance companies.

City officials hope with the creation of this new position they well better be able to complete the necessary commercial business inspections each year.
