Phase one of construction on the new Cherry Avenue overpass on Interstate 80 in Kearney is moving along, with a target completion date the end of August -- which is slightly ahead of schedule.
This starts phase two from 11th Street north to 56th Street, where the new Central Nebraska Veterans Home will be located.
Although phase two will not be completed for a couple more years, officials say things are falling into place.
"It works well as far as having Cherry built, the bypass built in order to have a V.A. Home in that location," said Kearney's City Utilities Director Rod Wiederspan. "So everything kinda fits together real well."
Officials have anticipated that the new access would lead to more development in this area.
"It's kinda all coming together now as far as what our vision was, to get the interchange in and what it actually meant for economic development for the community," Wiederspan said.
A ribbon cutting ceremony for the Cherry Avenue overpass is scheduled at the Archway Monument on August 27 at 10 a.m., and the new 56th and Cherry access to the Kearney airport will be paved this fall.
