New Horse Complex Tops Nebraska State Fair Wish List

Posted: Updated:

A new horse complex tops the list as the Nebraska State Fair makes plans for future expansion.

The fair has been using the Thompson Arena at Fonner Park, but board members would like a new facility along the lines of those they built for cattle and hogs.

It's just one of several improvements the fair hopes to make.

Board Member Bill Marshall of Grand Island said, "We know anytime you stand still you go downhill. We're intent on putting on a better show every year."

Members of the fair board plan to visit equine complexes in Kentucky and Florida in the coming months. They're also looking at ways to tie-out more cattle.

Plus they'd like to add an indoor food court, lake, and water feature in the coming years.

One new building is already under construction. The Nebraska Building will have more space for commercial vendors, plus an area that will be a year-round exhibit telling the story of agriculture in Nebraska.

Fair Board member Tam Allen of Nebraska said they'd discovered a new attraction in the process of putting that building up. He said they intend to erect steel during the fair, which could attract a crowd and build interest in the new building.
