Detasseling Crews Begin

Posted: Updated:

Detasseling has become a popular way for kids and teens to make a good chunk of change in the summer, while helping local agriculture.

Nearly 2,000 area middle schoolers and high schoolers have been picked up for employment by S & J Detasseling, which is just one of many crews in the area thanks to the large number of corn fields in the area.

Not only are kids making good money for the amount of time put in, but they are also learning first hand about agriculture.

"We go into the field and detassel the female rows that are shorter than the other ones and it helps pollinate the corn and produces more," says local detasseler Chaz Jancine.

Detasseling processes last for about a month and usually start at the beginning of July, but thanks to the late spring, crews are expected to be out until mid-August.
