The trial date has been rescheduled for a 27-year-old man charged with child abuse in the death of a 2-year-old Gering girl.
Dustin Chauncey was originally scheduled to go to trial August 5 for the death of Juliette Geurts, but that date has been pushed back until October 21. Defense lawyers sought more time to prepare their case for Chauncey.
Chauncey pleaded not guilty to intentional child abuse resulting in Juliette's death in July 2008.
Chauncey was dating the girl's mother, Charyse Geurts, at the time of
the incident. Geurts was also charged in the death, but charges against
her have dismissed due to the statute of limitations.
Chauncey is currently serving time in a Colorado prison on a drug conviction.
