The Nebraska Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR), a Department of Defense committee, announced that Zack Zaczkowski, the General Manager of the Cabela's retail store in Kearney, is to be honored with a Patriot Award in recognition of extraordinary support of Mitchell Burch, a member of the United State Marine Corps Reserve 2/24 E Company. The ESGR presented him with the award today, July 19th at 11:00am at the Kearney Cabela's Store.
"The main reason I want to acknowledge my employer is due to the fact that scheduling me around my drill schedule is very difficult but when I need to be at drill they are very accepting" stated Lance Corporal Burch. "Not only do they help my service out but they also employ several branches of the Guard and Reserves. They roughly employ 10 active drilling soldiers on top of myself and this is why I want my employer to be acknowledged for it."
Garth Scism, Kearney-area ESGR volunteer, reached out and thanked Zaczkowski and Cabela's for fostering a culture of supporting the National Guard and Reserve. Scism noted that "this award is a special recognition in that it can only be given as a result of a nomination by a service member. It reflects the thanks of, not only the service member, but the ESGR committee as well, for being a supportive employer."
Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve seeks to foster a culture in which all employers support and value the employment and military service of members of the National Guard and Reserve of the United States. ESGR facilitates and promotes a cooperative culture of employer support for the National Guard and Reserve by developing and advocating mutually beneficial initiatives, recognizing outstanding employer support, increasing awareness of applicable laws and policies, resolving potential conflicts between employers and their service members, and acting as the employers' principal advocate with DoD.
