A Grand Island standoff ends with cheers from residents, as police get their man.
The man was wanted for armed robbery. Police say Joseph Ronquillo of Wood River stole dozens of guns from a home and would not give himself up.
With a flash and a bang, the GIPD's Tactical Response Team armed with rifles pulled the wanted man from his car around 5:30 on Tuesday evening.
Police tried to arrest Ronquillo during a traffic stop, but he resisted.
Officers are thankful it ended without shots being fired.
Capt. Dean Elliott said it would have been best if the suspect had given himself up, but he would not.
Elliott said, "Made some indications he wasn't going to be taken and he was going to flee the scene. We called the Tactical Response Team. They came in and were able to affect an arrest on the subject after he resisted."
Officers arrested Ronquillo, wearing baggy jeans, a white t-shirt, and red sneakers, as a huge crowd looked on. The traffic stop took place just off Broadwell Street, near the busy Five Points intersection.
Many stood with their phones capturing the scene. Officers say they lacked manpower to extend their perimeter, but were able to keep onlookers out of the line of fire.
Ronquillo was booked into the Hall County jail on several counts, including robbery, use of a firearm, resisting arrest, and possession of marijuana.
Capt. Elliott added that officers spotted another wanted man in the crowd, and arrested him following a foot pursuit.
