Terminally Ill Teen Inspires Others to Give Cancer the Boot

Posted: Updated:

Update: We here at NTV are saddened to informed that 19 year old Megan Swartwood of Elm Creek succumb to her illness on Monday in the comfort of her home. To send condolences or flowers to the family of this brave young woman visit www.osrfh.com.

Nineteen-year-old Megan Swartwood of Elm Creek has been battling a rare form of brain cancer for three years now.

After six surgeries and with her diagnosis now terminal, she's vowed to raise awareness for cancers like her own.

Until recently you'd never guess that she's been fighting brain cancer for the past three years.

"She was at her very first job and she had a seizure, and then we ended up at the hospital. Within five hours we found out that she had a brain tumor," said her mother, Sara.

While her diagnosis was once promising, over the years things have taken a turn.

Megan now has stage four Glioblastoma and with every option exhausted, is considered terminal.

Her father, Doran says, "What she has normally is something they find in forty- or fifty-year-old people. It's not something they find in teenagers."

It was not long ago that Megan and her friends made the YouTube video for her Kick Cancer's Butt campaign.

She hopes that by designing shoes for each cancer (gray shoes for brain cancer, etc.) that more donations and awareness will be made for cancers that need more research.

"She really wants it to happen, it's like her legacy really," explained her cousin Jenna.

And as time draws near for Megan, her strength and hope shines through. "I'm not brave, I just have cancer."
