Fourth Nebraskan Infected with West Nile Virus

Posted: Updated:

So far this year, four cases of people infected with the West Nile virus have been reported.

A 75-year-old man from Douglas County was recently diagnosed, the first case for the county, according to the Douglas County health department. The department says the man has been hospitalized.

Health officials believe he was infected when he traveled recently to an area in the state where mosquito pools have tested positive for the virus. A map of the tested mosquito pools can be found here. So far this year, no mosquitos in Douglas County have tested positive for the virus.

Dr. Adi Pour, the county's health director, says cases are typically reported around this time of year. Officials note that most people who are infected have no symptoms, or experience mild flu-like symptoms. The most vulnerable people are those who are at least 50 years old or have weakened immune systems.
