Man Accused in Gering Child Abuse Death Asking for New Lawyer

A 27-year-old former Gering man accused with child abuse resulting in the death of a two-year-old girl is asking for a new attorney.

Dustin Chauncey has asked that the Nebraska Public Commission on Public Advocacy be appointed to represent him. Chauncey said his current public defender's caseload is too heavy to adequately represent him.

This comes after the trial, originally scheduled for August 5, was delayed until October to allow time for defense lawyers to prepare for the case.

Chauncey has pleaded not guilty to intentional child abuse resulting in the death of Juliette Geurts in July 2008.

Chauncey was dating the girl's mother, Charyse Geurts, at the time of the incident. Geurts was also charged in the death, but charges against her were dismissed due to the statute of limitations.

Chauncey is currently serving time in a Colorado prison on a drug conviction.
